A Senior figure at one of Scunthorpe biggest employers has apologised for 'stupid' remarks he made about the town at a high profile conference.

John Baines, senior trading controller for Nisa-Today's, claimed one of the town's main industries was 'handbag theft', and was reported as saying local women wore mattresses on their backs 'in case they meet someone they know'.

He then told his audience: "If you want to know what Scunthorpe looked like in the 1970s ... go there tomorrow."

The comments were made during a speech at the 16th annual conference of the national Federation of Wholesale Distributors in Oxford.

But his employers at Nisa-Today's have distanced themselves from the remarks, which they said were 'stupid and ill informed' and do not reflect the view of the company.

Chief executive of Nisa-Today's, Neil Turton, said: "John Baines works for Nisa and we think what he did was stupid and we do not agree with it at all.

"Here we have one of our employers at a conference who tried to be funny. It was stupid and he was ill advised.

"It is not the company's view at all. It has utterly nothing to do with the company's view.

"We would like to place on record our apologies to the people of the town.

"We just think it was completely wrong. It was meant in humour but people do not take it like that."

The comments came to light after they were printed online by the Off Licence News.

Graham Holter, the publication's group editor, said he was reporting on the annual conference discussing the drinks retailing and wholesaling sectors.

He said: "The comments were intended to be funny and were taken as such. All banter really."

Nisa-Today's has 195 people working in Scunthorpe, but only a small number of them are in the massive new development at Normanby Enterprise Park.

However, Bibby has 651 people working there in distribution for Nisa-Today's.

Mr Turton said the company had been in the town for 18 years and added: "The company is in the town because it is where we want to be.

"We have a great relationship with the town and our employees."

He stressed the company announced last month plans to invest pounds3.75-million in Scunthorpe.

And to reinforce its commitment to the town and its people, the company yesterday announced it would be making a

Launching a magazine in the present climate is a brave decision. There may be a recession around the corner and women are not buying as many magazines as they did last year. However, I assume Real publisher H Bauer have research that proves it will work.

Bauer is a very successful company and Real chief Janice Turner is a very good editor so they must have sat down together and come up with an idea they felt would sell. No-one launches into this market without an enormous amount of research that looks into the potential readership.

I think Glamour, which was launched last month, will be a success - it's a good magazine and I'm really impressed with it. I think something with the novelty value of that fits-your-handbag size is a great idea. I don't how long that will be maintained, we just don't have that crystal ball. The media has grown and we're a much more sophisticated nation. Newspaper Saturday supplements are a million times better than they were five years ago, they're like miniature magazines.

This is not new. In Italy, Saturday supplements have been fantastic glossy magazines for years. They've always looked beautiful and always been separate glossies that come with the newspaper.

I don't think the women's magazine market is becoming too tired - women love reading magazines. We don't appeal to a Marie Claire reader, she's not going to buy Cosmopolitan. Most magazines are aimed at specific audiences - our readers probably won't buy Marie Claire and vice versa.

Cosmo appeals to a majority of women readers because of the issues we cover. There are lots of areas that need to be covered and looked at. A magazine like Vogue, which sells under half of what we sell, is still phenomenally brilliant and successful because it has a specific market it aims for and it does that really well. It never wanted to be a mass-market magazine.

Women will always love reading magazines. First issues and launch issues of magazines are special, but people tire of that and often go back to the things they've been buying for years. It takes a long time to establish a magazine.

There are a selection of ideas around the world and they reach each country at different times. Real is a good idea. It's based on Brigitta, which sells very well in German - but who knows how it will do here?

I've seen the cover and I think it looks very good. It may well be hugely successful, it's just impossible to predict. I expect it to have some really good "real women" first-person pieces, I expect a very glossy-looking weekly magazine and I do expect it to work.

There will probably be less soap star content in Real than the other weeklies. I think it will be pitched to a lot older audience than the Cosmopolitan market - we're 18 to 32 or 33.

I don't think its going to change the market or the way we think about magazines. Everyone will wait and see how this does and I would have thought it will be a year or two before someone else launches into the same kind of market to rival it.

I think the market will stabilise a bit for now. People will wait and see what's going on. We're launching Cosmo Girl at the end of this year because we think the teen market is ripe for glossy stylish, fashion and beauty-orientated magazines.

Fashionista style handbags, complete with their luxury logos and tags, are too prohibitively priced for the majority of mortals.

But an enterprising Lincolnshire couple are making it possible for more women to have the kind of bags toted by the WAGS.

Jo and James Trafford have set up Handbag Hire, an Internet service which works like an exclusive library.

The couple have invested in dozens of bags from tiny clutches for evening wear through to Gladstone-style bags so capacious they almost qualify as luggage.

Among the designers featured in the collection are Prada, Fendi, Balenciaga, Gucci and Louis Vuitton.

There are also bags by hot Los Angeles designer m.andonia, Fake Damier azur Handbags who is patronised by Paula Abdul and Jennifer Aniston, as well as funky Kipling bags with their furry monkey key-chain.

Former sales rep Jo, of Witham St. Hugh's, says she thought of the hire idea two years ago but held back at first because her three children were so young and she was worried that fashion trends in handbags were too fickle.

"I was worried about bags only being cool for a limited time- span," Jo says. "But after some research I realised there are many styles which keep their popularity.

"Of course, I am a handbag addict myself T8 LED Tube T8-1500mm - I have always had a weakness for really expensive bags and I guess my personal favourite is Fendi, or anything designer in green - my favourite colour."

Now the Traffords' twins Sophie and Tierney (six) and Max (four) are at school, Jo has launched Handbag Hire.

And while Jo does most of the running of the business, husband James is a co-director, which given that he is a rugby-playing police officer, means plenty of leg-pulls.

"When I find myself talking knowledgeably about different handbag styles it is rather worrying!" James says.

"It's a bit less easy to come across as butch when you can tell your Gucci from your Prada!

"However, I have to stay involved so I can make sure Jo doesn't keep all the bags for herself, which was my suspicion at first!"

Customers pay a pounds7.50 per month membership fee after which they can borrow as few or as many bags as they wish and keep them for up to a month.

Hire charges range from a minimum of pounds10 to pounds35 a week.

There is also a delivery charge of pounds9.95 per item, though this is waived for local clients.

Jo admits she has enjoyed turning her passion into her profession - especially the buying element.

So far the most expensive item in the collection is a Chloe Paddington bag (pounds1,150).

And the most surprising is an Anya Hindmarch gold evening bag, which Jo discovered has a lining featuring graphic scenes from the Kama Sutra.

One of the best customers so far, Lucy Hoskins, from Dorset, says: "This is such a fantastic idea - I am mad on handbags but I can't really justify spending any more than pounds100 on one.

"This way I can spend less and have more bags - I can't wait for someone to start hiring designer shoes too."
