2010年2月13日

JUST two three bedroom terrace homes remain at George Wimpey's Farriers Keep development in Newcastle. The semi-rural Keele Road site has proved so popular with buyers that they have wasted no time taking their pick from the choice of family homes available.

Daniel McGowan, regional sales and marketing director for Taylor Wimpey, says: "We're down to our final pair of three-bedroom Rothwell terraced homes, and with incredible value prices from just Pounds 154,750 for this popular house style, they are unlikely to be available for much longer. "Anyone still harbouring hopes of staking their claim in this sought-after development will have to be quick - before someone else beats them to it!" The versatility of the generously proportioned Rothwell makes it an ideal purchase for a wide range of house-hunters - from first-time buyers, couples and downsizers through to growing families in search of extra space.

Upstairs, the landing leads to the master bedroom with fitted wardrobes, two further good-sized bedrooms and a main bathroom.

Outside, each Rothwell has two allocated parking spaces and is completed to a high specification, including Roger Dubuis Watch energy-efficient double glazing and central heating and fitted kitchen with integrated oven, hob and hood.

The house builder also offers a range of time and money-saving incentives for first-time buyers and to those with a home to sell tailored to their circumstances, including help with deposits and legal fees, or assistance in finding a buyer for an existing property.

Farriers Keep is west of Newcastle town centre, within easy reach of a variety of local amenities including a shopping centre and a golf club, while the town has a wide choice of leisure amenities, schools and nurseries, bars, restaurants and a

Shopping for tennis gear is no

2010年2月12日

All I wanted were new tennis shoes to replace the ones I had worn out by kicking my racquet. A pair of Reebok Club C, the same brand and style I had been buying annually for the past 15 or 20 years of racquetkicking. So I go to the sporting goods store in the mall and ask the young employee where the tennis shoes are located. "Did you want, like, cross trainers, power trainers, speed trainers, zone trainers, interval trainers, treadmill cross tra ..." "Like, tennis," I interrupt. "Tennis trainers?" "Tennis shoes," I explain. "I'm way past the training stage." "You mean, like, shoes you play tennis in?" "That's pretty much what I was thinking I'd use them for," I agree. "Although I might wear them for walking the dog once in a while." "I don't think we have any shoes just for tennis. But I can check to see if we Replica Dior Handbags have dog walking shoes." None of the other 30 or 40 sporting goods stores in that mall have tennis shoes for tennis, either. So I go outside the mall to a huge sporting goods store that is part of a national chain. The store has dozens of athletic shoes on display. There's one entire wall filled with golf shoes and another with basketball shoes priced just right for anyone who recently has won the lottery or received a government bailout. The selection of tennis shoes, on the other foot, consists of two, neither of which is the model I want.

I don't know why it's so hard to find tennis shoes these days. Maybe it's because all those boomers who used to play tennis now have had hip replacements, which has forced them to give up athletics entirely and turn to golf.

And part of the problem may be that tennis doesn't Prada Bags Replica spend millions of dollars promoting its shoes the way basketball does. If Maria Sharapova endorsed whatever shoes she wears, I'm sure they would become best sellers.

Then again, it's possible that Maria Sharapova doesn't even wear shoes when she plays; all I've ever never noticed about her is her major attributes, such as her backhand and her topspin lob.

Whatever the reason, I finally give up the search for tennis shoes in sporting goods stores and go home to look for them online.

My first search leads
embroidered patches me to a site that sells table tennis shoes. The Killerspin Kinetic shoes, the site declares, were "designed by a team made up of engineers and world-class table tennis athletes" and are on sale for $45.

Another search takes me to a site that offers Bridal Sneakers Wedding Shoes, which apparently are an actual product, although you never can be too sure with the Internet.

According to the site, the shoes come in all heights and the "color works well with both white and ivory dresses."

The four-inch heel wedding sneakers cost $139.95, but have "a plasticized finish durability." I'm not sure why wedding shoes have to be durable.

Eventually I locate my Reeboks online and now my tennis shoes are in the mail.

While I wait for them to arrive, I'll pass the time trying to find a pair of tennis shorts.

SECRETS OF DESIGNER SHOP GIRLS

2010年2月11日

Byline: TAMARA KAMINSKY

FILMS such as Shopgirl starring Claire Danes and Steve Martin may glamorise the life of the humble shop assistant but what's life really like for the girl behind the designer counter? TAMARA KAMINSKY reports.

EVER since my mother took me on my first trip to London's Bond Street, I have been terrified of the women behind the counters in smart boutiques.

The reason for this is simple.

Nobody likes to be judged, not even by a stranger. Which is why a portion of my wardrobe - my Sunday Best - is reserved not for church or for weddings, but for clothes shopping.

Tiffany Earrings

I make excuses. I say it's simply easier to get the attention you need if you look like a serious contender for that [pounds sterling]1,000 handbag. This is a lie. The real reason I like to look the part is her. The snooty shopgirl.

We all know the type. A perfect size six, no older than 35 and meticulously groomed, she stands behind the counter like a ballerina in first position, looking down at the shop floor.

She is wearing the designer's clothing head to toe. She is a personal billboard for the label - The Armani Woman, The Hermes Woman, The Gucci Woman. And that's a full 15 years after Julia Roberts turned the tables on LA's snobbish shop assistants in Pretty Woman to rapturous applause in many cinemas.

Entering these stores, I feel like an eight-year-old trying on her mother's clothes. 'As if ', they are thinking to themselves as I walk in.

Is it me? Am I being paranoid? It is, after all, just a job. They probably don't earn more than me. And yet, they are looking me up and down.

Which is why Steve Martin's new film, Shopgirl, made such compelling viewing. The lead role of a Saks Fifth Avenue glove department assistant is played by a meek Claire Danes.

It appears that in this store there isn't much call for satin opera gloves.

Until that is, a wealthy older man buys a pair and then sends them back to her, with Gucci Replica Watch an invitation to join him for dinner.

SUDDENLY, I realised that the immaculate shopgirls, I'd spent years in awe of, were human, too. Even if they didn't show it under their Armani armour.

So I went back to find out.

'When you put on that uniform', says Jo, from one of the Armani shops, 'you are an Armani girl. It doesn't matter if you went out and got smashed the night before, or if you smoke ten packs a day.

'There are women coming into the store spending huge sums of money just so they can look like you. You have to live up to that role. I do change my accent and my posture, and I try to be polite but it can still be intimidating.' When shops are investing millions into their brand image, it's no wonder that they expect their assistants to deliver. But the pressure of hitting sales targets means that the girls often end up using all of their charms. The staff in the fine jewellery department at Harrods see flirting as par for the course.

'When a man comes in to the shop and wants to spend money on something that will make his girlfriend or wife gasp, he basically needs a replacement for her,' shrugs one.

'If it's a necklace, we're not going to ask him to try it on in front of the mirror, so we hold it up to our own necks so he can see. You do play up to

Security failed totally for No

2010年2月11日

Security failed totally for Northwest flight Nine years after Sept. 11, terrorists still foiled only by luck, individual heroism.

It's all just window dressing: the long lines at the security checkpoints; walking in socks through the metal detector; the three- ounce limit on liquid per bottle; and now, the prohibition against standing during the last hour of an international flight or keeping anything in your lap.

None of the security precautions for air travel or the massive bureaucracy put in place since Sept. 11 have foiled an attempt by a passenger to blow up a plane in flight. What has stopped planes from being blown out of the sky has been the actions of flight attendants and passengers.

A.lange Sohne Watch Replica

Richard Reid, the shoe bomber, was foiled in December 2001 by a flight attendant who spotted the bomb's burning fuse. A Dutch passenger on the Christmas flight from Amsterdam to Detroit jumped Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab after the Nigerian attempted to ignite explosives sewn into his underpants.

Despite the claim by Janet Napolitano, the secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, that "the system worked," the list of security failings that allowed Abdulmutallab onto the Northwest flight to Detroit is as appalling as it is lengthy.

Like Reid, Abdulmutallab paid cash for his ticket and had only a carry-on bag. Although his father had warned Central Intelligence Agency officials in Nigeria that his son had become an Islamic radical, no warning was issued to airlines and Abdulmutallab's visa was not reviewed. The father's warning was not connected to an intelligence report from Yemen that al-Qaida was preparing to use a Nigerian in a terrorist attack.

Britain refused in May to renew his visa, and put him on a watch list. That information was not shared with the United States.

Abdulmutallab's flight went through Amsterdam, where body scanning machines that could have detected the explosives are installed. However, they are not used for U.S. flights. Finally, no air marshals were on

What saved the lives of the 289 souls aboard the Christmas Day flight was both luck and the heroism of a passenger. Nine years after Sept. 11, airline security is in much the same state as it was then, when the passengers of the fourth hijacked plane sacrificed their lives to thwart terrorists' plan to crash it into the U.S. Capitol.
