Ribbon factory to move after h

REGENERATION experts have been urged to find alternative premises for a ribbon factory after plans to build up to 200 homes on the site were approved.

Staffordshire Moorlands district councillors yesterday gave the go-ahead for developer Richborough Estates to create houses on the Selectus site in Biddulph.

Selectus had employed more than 400 workers at the Uplands Mill base in its heyday, but that fell to 40 as its fabrics production moved to China.

The firm, which has operated from the mill since 1936, made dozens of workers redundant in 2007.

And a report to councillors stated: "The loss of employment use is regrettable, but the applicant has argued there is little or no demand for this type of property for manufacturing.

"The company intends to transfer all but the specialist production to Selectus China.

Councillor John Fisher told the meeting: "We are losing industrial sites across the Moorlands on a regular basis.

But residents raised concerns about an increase in traffic.

Biddulph North Residents' Association vice-chairman Bob Hart said: "It surprises me that the highways authority has not made an application for a financial contribution for road modifications.

Mr Hard also raised concerns about nearby wildlife and the impact of extra residents on school places.

The area is a site of biological importance (SBI) and is home to a bat colony. Developers must create an artificial bat roost before demolition starts.

Richborough Estates will build two, three and four-bedroomed houses and one and two-bedroomed flats. One third will be affordable homes.

She led a varied and adventurous life, from travelling to China and Japan in the 1930s, to exploring spiritual paths and helping to support Stroud's Hawkwood College. Rhoda, then Harris, was born on August 20, 1909, in Kensington as the second of three children. She died on January 3, 2010, aged 100.

THE media has reported on the plight of padi farmers who experienced reduced yields due to insect attacks on their crops.

The audiotape of Alan Clark's Diaries - barely mentioned in this rather Dr Watsonish, sensible shoe of a biography - is well worth hearing.

Alan Clark narrates them himself, in a wonderfully high camp, pantomime manner, reminiscent of Kenneth Williams reading the Just William stories.

It's a rib-tickling comic turn, and adds a new dimension to the original book, an additional mirror reflecting on the first mirror at a jaunty angle. Clark's semi-parodic tone acts as a sort of wry critique on the diaries, which are themselves, of course, a wry critique on his life. Observing himself observing himself, Clark uses every inflection of his voice to bring out the humorous and the grotesque, the essential absurdity and self-delusion of Clark the anti-hero.

What is the effect of a diary on its author?

Inevitably, it gives a staged quality to the life. In her biography of Samuel Pepys, Claire Tomalin suggests that his diary allowed Pepys to divide himself in two - to become, as it were, both the actor and his audience, both the man of the world and the dispassionate observer of that man of the world. As a man, Pepys could be vain, randy, ambitious and deceitful (much like another parliamentarian 300-odd years later), but as the observer of that same man he was able to hover, eagle-eyed, overhead, recording, however unfavourably, his own ways.

In the past few weeks, there have been grumbles from Alan Clark's old tag heuer replica enemies, fed up with all the praise flying in his direction. Unfair it may be, but, in the words of the song, when it comes to the diarist, 'it's not what you do, it's the way that you do it - that's what gets results.'

In the second half, his biographer is obliged to go over ground already covered in the published diaries, often elbowing out their essential jokiness to make way for dogged paraphrase. I'M always uncomfortable with people seeming to cash in on the celebrity status of a relative, especially when it's a parent taking advantage of their child.

He questions his own motives for making this documentary about how his daughter Amy's drug addiction has affected his life. But not enough to actually stop the cameras from filming.

The show, which includes footage of Mitch joining Amy in St Lucia where she spent nine months fighting her addictions, is an interesting insight into life with a child with a drug habit.

It's also a good guide to what not to wear in front of the cameras (Amy's mum - pull your straps up) and shows that even if you fork out for a Harley Street therapist, you could still end up with one that has a footballer-style habit of saying "you know" a lot.

WE LOVE COMEDY

8 OUT OF 10 CATS C4, 10pm

CATS are supposed to have nine lives and if that really is the case, time could be running out for the smuggest man on the telly - because Jimmy Carr's comedy panel show is nine series' old today.

Well, technically it will be nine whole series old in six weeks' time, at the end of the latest run. But that would ruin the intro to this preview!

As usual, each show sees the teams - captained by Sean Lock and Jason Manford - guessing what the British public thinks about the week's most talked-about subjects.

And as usual, being correct will come second to who can give the funniest answers.

Guests for the first show include Claudia Winkleman, Jamelia and the brilliant comedian Shappi Khorsandi.

If anybody manages to put Jimmy in his place tonight, my money's on her.
