Staffordshire Moorlands district councillors yesterday gave the go-ahead for developer Richborough Estates to create houses on the Selectus site in Biddulph.

Selectus had employed more than 400 workers at the Uplands Mill base in its heyday, but that fell to 40 as its fabrics production moved to China.

The firm, which has operated from the mill since 1936, made dozens of workers redundant in 2007.

And a report to councillors stated: "The loss of employment use is regrettable, but the applicant has argued there is little or no demand for this type of property for manufacturing.

"The company intends to transfer all but the specialist production to Selectus China.

Councillor John Fisher told the meeting: "We are losing industrial sites across the Moorlands on a regular basis.

"The 40 people working there will want to relocate elsewhere in the town.

But Councillor Jim Davies said: "Forty years ago this was a pleasant greenfield site, but it is now a factory in a heavily populated area.

But residents raised concerns about an increase in traffic.

Biddulph North Residents' Association vice-chairman Bob Hart said: "It surprises me that the highways authority has not made an application for a financial contribution for road modifications.

Mr Hard also raised concerns about nearby wildlife and the impact of extra residents on school places.

The area is a site of biological importance (SBI) and is home to a bat colony. Developers must create an artificial bat roost before demolition starts.

Richborough Estates will build two, three and four-bedroomed houses and one and two-bedroomed flats. One third will be affordable homes.

Work on the scheme is expected to start in the summer.

BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) held a banquet Wednesday in Beijing to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic ties between China and Grenada.

Addressing the banquet, CPAFFC Vice President Li Xiaolin said that since China and Grenada resumed ties in 2005, the relationship had developed rapidly, deepening political mutual trust, and closer cooperation and high-level contacts.

China and Grenada established diplomatic relations in 1985 and severed ties in 1989 over the issue of Taiwan.

Li said the CPAFFC was ready to make more efforts to advance bilateral people-to-people contacts.

Grenadian Prime Minister Tillman Thomas paid a visit to China last year, during which Chinese leaders pledged closer ties.

Grenada hoped to carry out exchanges between business people and officials, participate in the economic forum between China and the Caribbean countries as well as the World Expo in Shanghai, so as to enhance personnel, trade and investment exchanges with China, said Grenadian Ambassador to China Marcelle Gairy at the banquet.

Dennie Ho Kit Keung, 54, had mailed 974 air gun pellets, 67 military bullets, 63 military cartridge cases, five blank cartridges, and three packets of gunpowder to a man surnamed Wang in Jiangsu's Huai'an City from 2006 to 2007, according to the Jiangsu Provincial Higher People's Court.

Ho was detained by police on Aug. 19, 2007, at the Luohu Port in Shenzhen in south China, when he was bringing seven sporting gun bullets into the mainland, the court heard.

He was sentenced to seven years in jail in December 2008 at the Huai'an Municipal Intermediate People's Court, and was fined 3,000 yuan (441 U.S. dollars).

Ho lodged an appeal, but the sentence was upheld by the Jiangsu Provincial Higher People's Court late last year, the court statement said.

Ho had been a police officer in Hong Kong until 2006.

Wang's case is under further investigation, the statement said.

She led a varied and adventurous life, from travelling to China and Japan in the 1930s, to exploring spiritual paths and helping to support Stroud's Hawkwood College. Rhoda, then Harris, was born on August 20, 1909, in Kensington as the second of three children. She died on January 3, 2010, aged 100.

The audiotape of Alan Clark's Diaries - barely mentioned in this rather Dr Watsonish, sensible shoe of a biography - is well worth hearing.

Alan Clark narrates them himself, in a wonderfully high camp, pantomime manner, reminiscent of Kenneth Williams reading the Just William stories.

It's a rib-tickling comic turn, and adds a new dimension to the original book, an additional mirror reflecting on the first mirror at a jaunty angle. Clark's semi-parodic tone acts as a sort of wry critique on the diaries, which are themselves, of course, a wry critique on his life. Observing himself observing himself, Clark uses every inflection of his voice to bring out the humorous and the grotesque, the essential absurdity and self-delusion of Clark the anti-hero.

What is the effect of a diary on its author?

Inevitably, it gives a staged quality to the life. In her biography of Samuel Pepys, Claire Tomalin suggests that his diary allowed Pepys to divide himself in two - to become, as it were, both the actor and his audience, both the man of the world and the dispassionate observer of that man of the world. As a man, Pepys could be vain, randy, ambitious and deceitful (much like another parliamentarian 300-odd years later), but as the observer of that same man he was able to hover, eagle-eyed, overhead, recording, however unfavourably, his own ways.

In the past few weeks, there have been grumbles from Alan Clark's old tag heuer replica enemies, fed up with all the praise flying in his direction. Unfair it may be, but, in the words of the song, when it comes to the diarist, 'it's not what you do, it's the way that you do it - that's what gets results.'

The first half of this biography, dealing with Clark's life before Westminster, is much the more interesting. In the second half, his biographer is obliged to go over ground already covered in the published diaries, often elbowing out their essential jokiness to make way for dogged paraphrase. He sometimes seems a little clod-hopping, a little slow on the uptake, so that the reader finds himself screaming 'Behind you!' For instance, Trewin writes of Clark's account of the fall of Margaret Thatcher, 'Not that those involved accept his

The thing is, once you've spent a few balmy days feeling the wind over your feet, the thought of socks and shoes is nothing short of torture.

"I've still got three pairs in their boxes, unused, but I'm going to get more when I come back. You can't get them anywhere else in the world and they're my favourite ever boots.

So next week, Sylvain and the rest replica breitling of the Dolls - David Johansen (vocals), Steve Conte (guitar), Brian Delaney (drums) and former Hanoi Rocks bass guitarist Sami Yaffa - will be pounding the streets of Merseyside in search of quality footwear.

"I love The Beatles, so it's always a bit of a pilgrimage when I come to Liverpool," says Sylvain.

"I was in a John and Yoko movie when I was a kid. It was called Up Your Legs Forever, and was basically a film of people's shoes and legs. It was an art thing, I didn't know what was going on. But I was 15 and they paid me a dollar, so I was happy. "Years later, in 1974 I came to know John. He came in while I was recording with the New York Dolls.

"It was a crazy time. We were in the big studio, and he was next door in the little one, working on the Rock'n'Roll album. That was the period where he wasn't with Yoko, but I told him I was in their movie.

"I got him to play my guitar. It was quite a guitar - replica rolex a Gretsch White Falcon. I was in love with it - I wouldn't let anyone touch it.

"But this was John Lennon. He was one of my heroes. I wish he was still here."

The New York Dolls originally swaggered onto the New York music scene in the early '70s, influencing a generation with its subversive mix of high-decibel rock and high-heeled androgyny.

The original band recorded two seminal albums - the eponymous debut New York Dolls (1973) and Too Much Too Soon (1974), before calling it a day in 1977.

The surviving members reformed the group in 2004 to much acclaim, but soon lost bassist Arthur Kane to leukaemia.

In 2006, Johansen and Sylvain reunited again and recorded the NY Dolls' third studio album, One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This, which featured the single Dance Like A Monkey.

"It's great being back," chuckles Sylvain. "It started back in June, really, when we were on the Jools Holland show. What a dynamite series. Wow! Man, that guy is something else. I love the way he mixes up all those kinds of music. We had a ball.

"I had to remind him we played with him in Squeeze back in the day. It was when I was in a band with RCA and they dropped my tour support slots.

"I would open up for them in 3,000 seater venues, then at midnight I'd play a local club. We had some great nights."

But Sylvain certainly seems glad to have his old band back as a unit.

"I always wanted to put the Dolls back together," he explains.

"The weird thing is that we were all successful individually.

"But I was saying the other day, it's a good thing we started with all the make-up back then - because now we really need it. That decision back then really paid dividends."
